Hi, I’m Rachael Smith,

founder of The Marketing Lane

An independent marketing consultancy helping local businesses build, develop and implement their marketing plans and strategy.

Who is The Marketing Lane?

I worked in Marketing for 13 years across various Marketing functions, firstly at Reckitt Benckiser (RB) in Hull managing brands such as Lemsip, Gaviscon and Optrex and then at McCain Foods in Scarborough managing both their chips and non-chip portfolios. I had 2 children and in 2015 decided to get out of the corporate world. I set up my own company to help small and medium sized local businesses with marketing consultancy to help them understand their marketing strategy and implement better marketing plans. That was 4 years ago and I have enjoyed every minute of it since.
Have a look at the people I’ve been working with here.

Why use The Marketing Lane?

My mission is simple; to help local companies and organisations grow their business through the right marketing. I found that businesses were paying over the odds for large agencies when, with a bit of guidance, they could often do a lot of their marketing themselves or train their own staff to do parts of it, and save a lot of money in the process.
I am passionate about Hull and the East Yorkshire area. We have some fantastic businesses that are growing and helping our local economy flourish, and I want to help them do their marketing in a cost effective way.

What’s in a name?

My maiden name was Rachael Lane, I loved that name! A bit unique, a bit interesting, not too weird. Then I met my husband and took his name and I’ve been a boring Smith ever since! I wanted to keep my name in some part of my life so it was the natural choice for my business. It is also in tribute to my late father who passed away 5 years ago and was the catapult for me to get out of the global marketing world and start my own business to help local people.

About me

Heard of the Hull & East Riding Mumbler? It’s a website that lists and shares all things to do for families locally. I built Mumbler 4 years ago and still run it alongside my marketing work, with the help of my fantastic staff. If you have kids and want to find things to do in Hull and East Yorkshire check it out here.

I’m also the Trustee for a local charity, Bundles of Joy. They do amazing work by taking donations of pre-loved baby and children’s items then, following referrals from social services, send out a bundle of the right items for the right families. If you’d like to support them please find out more here.

I am on the Board for Viking FMs charity Cash for Kids, helping them to make decisions on where to send the funds they have raised to make the most difference to the lives of disadvantaged local children.

I’m the Chair of a local project called Hull Maternity Voices in Partnership. We help gather feedback and views of local women who are pregnant or have recently given birth to improve the local ante-natal, maternity and early years services. As Chair I lead the group with a team of health visitors, midwives, GPs, Consultants, charities and local organisations who all work together to improve the experience for parents. Find out more about that here.

And most importantly I’m a mum to my 4 year old daughter Brooke and 8 year old son Zachary. That’s the best bit.
